17 years after Friends aired its record-breaking series finale, the sextet reunited for a reunion special that premiered Thursday on HBOMax. Here, I delve into how the special came to be, the challenges it faced, and how well it honors the show’s legacy.

Author’s Note: I recently published a five-part series on the legacy of Friends in honor of its silver anniversary. Click here for Part I, in which I delve into the show’s astonishing legacy and the controversies that have been associated with it. After 8 seasons and 170 episodes the veteran CBS sitcom wrapped its run last night. Over the course of its run, the show evolved from a zany family sitcom into a nuanced exploration of addiction, recovery, and sisterhood. Here, I pay tribute to the series’ impressive legacy and review its final episodes.

When I started writing on Medium in 2018, one of my first articles was about the evolution of the CBS sitcom Mom. I marveled at how over the course of its first five seasons it evolved from a fairly standard-issue family sitcom from the Chuck Lorre factory into…

This year’s Oscars red carpet (This and all photos in this article are copyrighted by AMPAS and ABC)

Tonight, the 93rd Academy Awards were held live from Los Angeles. There were a couple of shocking upsets and a couple of touching speeches, but overall the ceremony was a dry and long-winded affair that fell short for reasons having virtually nothing to do with COVID. Thankfully, the awards that were handed out went to richly deserving recipients.

Notes on the Winners

To the surprise of few, Nomadland picked up the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. The film was the heavy favorite due to its dominance in those categories at prior ceremonies throughout this seemingly interminable awards season. Few, however…

Tomorrow, the long and windy road to the 93rd Academy Awards come to an end when the telecast airs live on ABC. The race has been impacted by the pandemic and profound and unprecedented ways and much remains unknown about how the ceremony will play out and who the winners of several categories will be. Here, I preview the telecast and provide predictions for who will win in all 23 categories.

Author’s Note: This article is about who I think will win the Academy Awards this year. To see who I think should win in the top 8 categories check…

On April 9th, Taylor Swift released her fourth new album in the last 20 months — sort of. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) is the first of Swift’s re-recordings of her first six albums, a virtually unheard of endeavor that she embarked upon after being blocked from purchasing the master recordings of them. The album features 27 tracks and is a masterfully updated, deeply nostalgic trip that proves that these re-recordings are so much more than a cash grab.

The Fascinating Saga of Taylor Swift’s Master Recordings

The saga over the master recordings of Taylor Swift’s first six albums is an epic…

20 years ago today, a film adaptation of Helen Fielding’s best-selling novel about a thirtysomething British singleton was released in theaters. It was an enormous box office hit, propelled Renee Zellweger’s career into the stratosphere, and spawned two commercially successful sequels. On the anniversary of its release, I look back at what made it such a popular film and how it holds up two decades later.

The Origin and Initial Release of Bridget Jones’s Diary

The story of Bridget Jones’s Diary begins in the mid-1990s when The Independent, a London-based newspaper, approached author Helen Fielding about writing a series of…

The cast of “The Nanny” (Image Copyright: Sony Pictures Television)

After years of only being available on DVD and reruns on obscure cable channels, Fran Drescher’s classic 1990s CBS sitcom finally made its streaming debut on April 1st via HBOMax. Having recently rewatched the series in its entirety on DVD, I can attest that it is certainly worth revisiting — and that it is possibly the most underrated comedy series of the 1990s.

The Nanny’s Six Season Run, Objectively Speaking

The Origin. The Nanny famously began by pure happenstance when Fran Drescher ran into current CBS President Jeff Sagansky on a transatlantic flight. She had recently starred in a short-lived…

The pandemic continued to impact Hollywood in unprecedented ways with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards being remote, pre-recorded, and significantly shortened. The condensed, fast-paced ceremony aired earlier tonight on TBS and TNT and was thankfully free of technological malfunctions, long-winded speeches, and awkward presenter banter. But it certainly didn’t clarify much about the race for the 93rd Academy Awards.

What are the SAG Awards and why are they important?

The SAG Awards are comprised of 15 awards competitive awards to individual actors and acting ensembles across film and television. The nominations are voted on by a subset of the…
